But don’t laws limit our freedom? Yes, the laws of the world can limit our freedom. At one point in time you weren’t allowed to practice whatever religion you want because there was a law against it. So how can laws be freedom if they’re limiting? The difference between a law that binds and a law that brings freedom is God. Through God’s laws we can find freedom. The laws He provides us with keep us from falling into sin, which can bind us. But wait, none of us are perfect. We can’t lead a perfect life, we will always fall into sin. How can we be free then if this is true? The answer is through Christ. Heavenly Father knew we couldn’t live a perfect life, that through our agency we would make mistakes. We needed a volunteer, someone who could live a perfect life down here on Earth so that our sins could be atoned for. That volunteer was Jesus Christ. He came down here, lived a perfect life, spread the gospel, brought the keys of the priesthood to the Earth, and paid the price for our sins. Through His Atonement we can be freed from the chains of sin and can continue to follow the laws of God.
“And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.” Helaman 5:12 (Book of Mormon)
It’s not a matter of if we sin, but when. Repentance can bring us back though. If we take advantage of the Savior’s Atonement we can be washed of our sins and be shown love and mercy. This makes following the laws of God possible. In the Book of Mormon the Nephites struggle with following the word of God and begin to feel pride and become obsessed with worldly things. Because of this they fall into wickedness and more laws have to be made. As the righteousness of the people decreases the laws that have to be set in place increase because people are committing crimes, regardless of whether is morally right. If the people were only to follow the laws of God they could live in a world without laws and would be able to choose for themselves what is moral and what is not. Do you see how the laws of God bring freedom? Through His laws we can be free from sin and free from the chains of the earth and of Satan. Our Heavenly Father wants us to be free and wants us to have our agency. Through Christ, even if we slip up, this freedom is possible.
