We’ve all wanted to erase past things in our lives. An embarrassing moment, a moment where we made the wrong choice, or a moment where we wished we had prepared more. We especially want to erase our sins and wrong doings. You can’t erase the past, but you can repent for past transgressions. Heavenly Father’s plan wasn’t to have us roam this world in misery. He wanted to give us agency, and through Christ we are able to repent for past transgressions when through our agency we make the wrong decisions. Because Christ went through the Atonement we can be forgiven of our sins. Without him we would be shown no mercy at the Judgement day. In the Book of Mormon Alma the younger recounts the moment in his life where he did all in his power to take down the church. He was then racked with eternal pain for three days because of all of the wickedness he had done.
“And it came to pass that as I was thus racked with torment, while I was harrowed up by the memory of my many sins, behold, I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world.
Now, as my mind caught hold upon this thought, I cried within my heart: O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who am in the gall of bitterness, and am encircled about by the everlasting chains of death.
And now , behold, when I thought this, I could remember my pains no more; yea, I was harrowed up by the memory of my sins no more.” Alma 36: 17-19
Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, Alma the younger was able to be forgiven of his sins and was able to forget about the pain. Christ took away the pain from Alma’s heart, leaving Alma to remember the sin, but not feel the guilt for it anymore. Christ doesn’t want us to feel guilty for our transgressions. It’s Satan who wants us to feel pain and misery and feel like we are unable to receive forgiveness. Christ wants us to come unto Him and repent. He wants us to use His infinite Atonement and to feel His love and mercy. So, why wouldn’t we take advantage of the Atonement if it takes away our pain and sorrow? We need to repent so we can be forgiven for our sins and so we can move on with life. Don’t dwell in the past. It doesn’t do you any good. All you can do is move forward. So move forward and let Christ take away the pains of your past.
