Planting a Seed in our Hearts

Intro Post

Everyday we intake so much information. How can we know if all of it is true? Especially when it comes to doctrine that churches are teaching. How do we know that what they are telling us is true? Alma, a prophet in the Book of Mormon, gives us an extended metaphor about planting a seed in our heart. Let’s break this down. The “seed” can be the information. You’re wanting to know if it’s true. An example could be a question; does God answer prayers? First start with a desire to know if this is true. Then it’s time to plant that seed in your heart. Let it grow and think on it. Now, how do we know whether the seed we planted is good or bad? S.E.E.D, a clever acronym from Alma 32:28.

“Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell withing your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say withing yourselves– It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.”

If the seed we have planted into our hearts is a good one it will swell within us, giving us peace and comfort and joy. Your soul will be enlarged and you can feel a sense of overwhelming love. Your understanding will be enlightened and you’ll begin to have a surety that the seed of information is true just as you know that gravity is a force. Then this information will be delicious to you, meaning that you take delight in it and that it is a part of you and your understanding. I believe this can be applied to any question you may have. James 1:5 says “if any of ye lack wisdom, let him ask of God,” this can just be the step before. Plant the seed in your heart, find out if it’s true, then counsel with our Heavenly Father the conclusion you have come to. The Holy Spirit will help you to hear Heavenly Father’s answer.
